Recently, I came across a post scaring entrepreneurs and startups. It describes how big a loss you will incur by not announcing your funding. Paranoia, fear, doom’s day are some really good weapons . When used effectively they can serve some real big interests. While intentions are difficult to gauge, lets first transpose to experience what these events feel like.
Say, after a long wait, finally you just got pregnant. All similar arguments will hold. You have just got something which is going to make you bigger. You must announce it. If you dont announce it, sooner or later, people are going to come to know about it. Your peers/friends and family will be swarmed by excitement, you will be talked about, people will come, call, wish you and WTF etc.The question is do you go and do a public broad cast?
Yes, if you a Demi Moore and Vanity fair pays you a few million for a shoot. In most other cases you dont. You let that feeling sink in. You want to be sure, you have got it right. You want ominous eyes to be away from your state , you relish this new found change with your partner first. Once you are ready, you take care to break this story slowly to the people you trust. The people you trust slowly wish you and if they are caring, they dont spread it too far.
Funding does things similar to you. Its an important event. It needs to sink in first with you, your partners and then with your employees. Relish the goodness it brings in, let the co founders silently relax on the little security it brings, let the pleasure of getting better machines reach the developers who have sweated on the product, let the office environment become slightly better so that the employees feel proud of the work place. Let your spouse and parents believe that now other people are also taking some risk on the bigger risk which you took. The guy whose back is aching for those 10 months sitting on a second rate chair probably needs a hot water bottle. Just like a child inside you, it will make you big, it comes with a huge set of responsibility . Its an extension of your life.
While all these good things happen, let the aroma of your funds spread spread gently.. Dont spray it around. An ancient saying says keep three things behind curtains, your food , your money and your woman. In overexposing your pregnancy or funding you run risk on ominous eyes. Tread carefully. People will associate correlate every action of yours good/bad or ugly to your new state..
People not genuinely concerned or involved will advise contrary, press mills run faster when you give them a piece of your meat. Learn to love people around you and use press not vice verca . You need not be a fuel to anyone’s traffic .Your pregnancy and funding aint anybody else’s f*****g business.
Nothing establishes the truth better than the data. Here please check the traffic trend of fetise.com which announced its funding in Jan 2012.
